About Barbara Arrowsmith-Young

Barbara Arrowsmith-Young is the founder of the Arrowsmith Program, an assessment process and a suite of cognitive exercises designed to stimulate and strengthen weak areas of cognitive functioning that underlie a range of learning difficulties, which has been delivered for 40+ years throughout the world.  Beginning in 1978, her work has been recognized as one of the first examples of the practical application of neuroplasticity.   The genesis of the Arrowsmith Program’s cognitive exercises lies in Barbara Arrowsmith-Young’s journey of discovery and innovation to overcome her severe learning disabilities. Her inspirational book ‘The Woman who Changed Her Brain’ has become an international bestseller and a third edition updated with new research was published in December 2019.  Barbara is the recipient of the 2019 Leaders and Legends Innovation Award from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto for her outstanding contributions to education in Ontario.

Description

In this presentation, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young discusses her journey of discovery and the lines of research she combined to create a cognitive program to identify and address learning difficulties.  A cognitive function framework of understanding behaviour and specific learning difficulties will be explained, insights into learning difficulties from current imaging research and research outcomes of a neuroplastic approach to addressing learning difficulties will be presented, along with principles that drive neuroplastic change. Research investigating the application of this work to those who have experienced TBI is also discussed.

About Enrico Quilico

Enrico Quilico is a doctoral candidate who runs a community-based physical activity program for adults with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) that is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). His undergraduate degree is from Concordia University and his graduate degree is from McGill University, where he began his research program in adapted physical activity. Enrico was featured as a 2020 Global Hero, a winner of the 2019 SSHRC Storyteller Competition, and nominated with the 2018 Change-Maker Award by the Neurological Health Charities of Canada.

Description

From first-hand experience with the rehabilitation continuum, to the latest physical activity research, to partnering with the TBI and fitness community in Quebec, Enrico will discuss the ways in which physical activity can improve mood, community participation, and quality of life in the post-rehabilitation context after moderate to severe TBI. Keeping up with the recommended amounts of physical activity is challenging for the entire population, and even more so after brain injury. Therefore, Enrico will address the best-practice methods of fostering positive sport and exercise participation after TBI as well.
