Helius Medical Technologies – PoNS Therapy
Helius Medical Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSDT), founded in 2014, is a leading innovator in neurological rehabilitation, dedicated to improving patients’ quality of life through advanced, non-invasive technologies. At the core of the company’s mission is the PoNS® (Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator) device, a therapeutic solution developed from decades of research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The PoNS® device delivers gentle electrical stimulation to the surface of the tongue, targeting two cranial nerves—the lingual branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN-V) and the chorda tympani branch of the facial nerve (CN-VII). This stimulation sends signals to the brainstem, the body’s control center for movement and coordination, promoting neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and rewire—ultimately improving balance and gait for people with neurological conditions.
PoNS is the only Health Canada-authorized device for balance or gait deficit due to mmTBI, multiple sclerosis, or stroke.
The PoNS Therapy Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS) is a new therapeutic intervention that leverages neuromodulation mechanisms to promote neuroplasticity for improvement of a balance and gait deficit in people with mild to moderate TBI, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. The system consists, of a lightweight portable controller worn around the neck and a mouthpiece that has 143 gold plated electrodes positioned to electrically stimulate the front top of the tongue. PoNS employs an electronic pulse generator designed to promote cranial nerve neuromodulation, also known as cranial nerve noninvasive neuromodulation, and also known as translingual neurostimulation.
