Explanation of Mask

The red and green represents the Welsh flag of Wales as I lived there for 24 years, then I came to Canada. I was part of the UK 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games for Track and field. I was also a part of the Bath Rugby team. I was a software engineer at the Royal Bank. Before the accident I felt able to do things and decisive. Since my stroke I feel annoyed, frustrated and worried.

Explanation of Mask

Colour being blue signifies sadness to me. The darker colour represents the change in weather and mood. The yellow signifies that there is some brightness shining through. The airplane signifies travel; I left Canada, to the other side of the world, to a foreign country. The gag, first when I went to New Zealand I was welcomes with open arms, after the accident that changed. Each word represents something in my storm that I have lost. I lost my kids and family, all these words signify loss. The light shining through, the yellow, is when something is bringing me up instead of tearing me down. I have tried to show people that if I can do what I am doing, they can also do it.

I had an aneurysm 4 years ago, I was 53. As an Asian Filipino Canadian, I’d like to share with everybody the Philippine flag. That’s what I would like to show on my mask. I painted the sun because it remind me of feeling powerful. Thank y so much for the opportunity to express my imagination. I am proud to be in the CHIRS community. I enjoy all the time I spend at CHIRS, the people, all the staff. They are all so friendly.

Explanation of Mask

The top of my mask represents broken glass because my brain feels like that. I cannot bring back it’s original form. The rest of my mask looks “normal” because from the outside you cannot tell that I have an invisible injury. Don’t be tricked by outside appearances. You never know what people are dealing with on the inside. My faith has strengthened from this and I am thankful for what I have.
